Abstract

Jeevan Khan was a senior bureaucrat who belonged to a village in District Jhang. His parents were simple rural folk, and he was raised in a traditional village environment. In his autobiography Jeevan Dhara, he provides a detailed account of his childhood spent in his native village. He vividly describes the hardships he faced in acquiring education, from primary schooling to higher studies. The narrative also highlights his father’s hard labor in the fields and portrays scenes of village social life, where people gathered at his grandfather’s Farm, sitting together, smoking hookah, and drinking lassi.His mother, like most rural women, played a crucial role in managing household responsibilities as well as participating in rural chores. Through these personal recollections, the author presents a comprehensive and lively portrayal of village life.Village life in his area was deeply connected with nature, characterized by open fields, simple mud houses, and unpaved streets. The villagers lived in close-knit communities, sharing each other’s joys and sorrows and extending mutual support in times of need. Traditional customs, folk tales, and local festivals added richness and color to their otherwise simple yet contented lives.
