A Study of Mufti Taqi Usmani’s Critical Views on Contemporary Economic Issues

Abstract

The present study explores Muhammad Taqi Usmani’s economic thought with particular attention to its relevance for current economic challenges. In a period marked by recurring instability in global economic systems, the research reviews his critical assessment of both capitalist and socialist models while highlighting the Islamic framework he presents as an alternative. Through analytical and juristic examination, the study discusses his position on issues such as collective ownership, surplus value, state intervention in markets, and the structural weaknesses observed within capitalist economies. It also evaluates his scholarly opinions on modern financial practices, including paper currency, installment transactions, corporate shareholding, speculative trading, gambling, lotteries, and prize bonds. The paper further considers contemporary labor concerns, such as wage determination, monopolistic practices, agricultural tenancy, and workers’ participation from an Islamic legal perspective. In addition, it examines the concept of an Islamic welfare state with emphasis on public wealth, welfare spending, and the pursuit of socioeconomic justice.
