The present research investigates the phenomenon of Dakhil fi al-Tafsir (interpolated or foreign material in Qur’anic exegesis) through a comprehensive historical and analytical approach. It explores how non-authentic, culturally influenced, or ideologically motivated interpretations entered Qur’anic commentaries over time. The study first defines the concept of interpolation in tafsir and traces its origins from the early Islamic centuries, identifying key historical phases where such materials proliferated. It then examines the major causes of this phenomenon—such as the influence of Isra’iliyyat (biblical traditions), sectarian and political biases, philosophical and mystical reinterpretations, linguistic misreadings, and the inclusion of weak or fabricated hadiths. Drawing upon classical sources like al-Itqan fi ‘Ulum al-Qur’an, al-Burhan fi ‘Ulum al-Qur’an, and Muqaddimah fi Usul al-Tafsir, as well as modern analytical works, this research highlights the critical efforts of scholars to purify Qur’anic exegesis from such distortions. Ultimately, the paper underscores the importance of methodological rigor, authenticity, and balance in contemporary Qur’anic interpretation, ensuring fidelity to the divine message and preservation of the exegetical tradition’s integrity.
