Proof of Possibility and Necessity (Burhan-e-Imkan-o-Wujub) through God's Attributes: The Attributes of Subutiyyah (Affirmative) and Salbiyyah (Negative)

Abstract

Several proofs have been presented to establish the existence of God (Khuda-wand-e-Muta'al). Among them is the celebrated Proof of Possibility and Necessity (Burhan-e-Imkan-o-Wujub). Farabi presented it first as the strongest proof of God's existence. It is used to prove the existence of God not only through existence itself, but also with the help of God's attributes, which he proved as Wajib-ul-Wujud (Necessary Being) after proving the existence of the Necessary Being. We consider all these attributes, the Affirmative (Sifat-e-Salbiyyah) and Negative (Sifat-e-Subutiyyah) attributes, to be indispensable for the Necessary Being (Wajib-ul-Wujud). Khawaja Nasir al-Din Tusi, in his work "Kashf al-Murad," has also discussed these attributes as the cause of the Necessary Being's existence.
